Electrical conductivity of alkaline earth doped BaNd2O4 spinel

Nataliia Tarasova

Abstract

Spinels constitute a broad class of inorganic compounds with the general formula AB2O4. Materials with a spinel structure display diverse physical and chemical properties. The spinel BaNd2O4 exhibits significant level of ionic conductivity and can considered as a promising electrolyte candidate for electrochemical energy conversion devices. The influence of the concentration of alkaline earth dopant Ba1‒xMxNd2O4 (M = Ca, Sr) on the ionic conductivity was investigated for the first time. The calcium-doped samples did not exhibit a single-phase composition. The strontium-doped samples were isostructural with the base composition at the range 0 < x ≤ 0.15. They are characterized by the mixed ionic-hole conductivity in dry air. The strontium doping leads to increase in the conductivity values up to 1.5 orders of magnitude at low temperatures. The maximal conductivity values are observed for the Ba0.9Sr0.1Nd2O4 composition.
